Origins

In the early days the ancestors of the modern Koreans were capable of surviving by hunting and gathering wild food. In the tens of thousands of years after, they began to grow crops like millet and beans. They also raised livestock and made furs. They formed tribal states in Manchuria, and then on the Korean peninsula. They also established an industry of metalworking, making bronze tools and later iron tools. They traded with other states and introduced celadon papermaking, block printing art styles, as well as written language to Japan.

In 2333 BCE Gojoseon came into existence in the southern region of the peninsula. The state adopted Buddhism and adopted Chinese culture including Confucian philosophy. In this period the inhabitants of Buyeo were incorporated into Gojoseon. The Korean peninsula has been continuously inhabited since Neolithic times. Early evidence of human settlements is evident in the form of graves lined with stone, with precious objects like amazonite jewelry being buried along with the dead. In the first second half of the 1st millennium BCE, Gojoseon established itself as the first recognisable political state. The northern part of the peninsula was occupied for a time by the Balhae Kingdom, which historians do not believe to be a real Korean state.

Following the Three Kingdoms arose the Proto-Three Kingdoms Period, also known as the Several States Period. Baekje, the most powerful of these states was diminished by the fall of Goguryeo (676 CE), leaving it with only its southern territories in Manchuria and the its western region around Hwanghae Bay. Eastern Buyeo and the Gaya confederacy, thrived for a while.

The Unified Silla Kingdom then emerged and the three kingdoms began to work together to expand their territories. In the final, Silla, with significant Chinese aid, conquered all other states and unified the peninsula in 935 CE.

As Korea enters the post-crisis period, its development paradigm appears to be in flux. The people who are awed by the cost of the old systems are in favor of a comprehensive plan for liberalization of capital, labor and markets for products. On the other hand the people who support the old system attempt to keep it alive through nationalist sentiments and by stoking fears of job losses.

Policy and academic analysts are starkly divided as to the extent to these two trends are driving Koreas shift towards a new model of economic governance. This article examines developments to date by analyzing five phases of Korea's political evolution that include illiberal democracy (1945-60) democratic authoritarianism (1961-72), authoritarian exceptionalism (1972-87) democratic paternalism (1987-2001), and participatory democracy (2002 to present). This article also identifies the key elements that are the driving force behind these developments.

Creationism in Korea

In South Korea, 26 percent of the population is Christian. Creationists have succeeded in promoting their views to this group. A survey from 2009 showed that almost one-third of respondents didn't believe in evolution. Of those, 41% claimed that there was insufficient evidence from science to support the theory 39% claimed that the theory was in contradiction to their religious beliefs; and 17% said it was difficult to comprehend. This level of disbelief approaches that of the United States, where a majority of people do not believe that humans evolved from less advanced types of life.

In the past, the anti-evolution campaign in Korea was primarily focused on educating students and in bringing Christ to them. In 1980 the year 1980, a four-day creation science seminar was held in Seoul during the World Evangelization Crusade. Drs. Henry Morris and Duane Giss of ICR were the featured speakers. The event attracted an audience of scientists, professors, and church leaders.

The event's success resulted in the formation of the Korea Association of Creation Research on January 31st of 1980. The inauguration meeting was widely reported in the national press, including The Korea Times and Chosun Ilbo and also attracted a lot of attention.

KACR began publishing a monthly newsletter called CREATION, in which it reported on its activities and published articles about scientific evidence for creationism. It also translated film strips and slides from ICR as well as a few books on creationism which were published outside of Korea. KACR members gave lectures in churches and universities throughout the country.

A KACR success was seen at KAIST University in Seoul. There, students were so fascinated by the concept of creationism that they raised the money and support needed to build an on-campus museum featuring creationist fossil models and other exhibits.

In the latter half of the nineteenth century and early twentieth century, Korea began to adopt an increasingly Westernized lifestyle. The traditional hanbok, or Korean dress, was replaced to miniskirts and other style elements from overseas. The traditional Korean music was also replaced by jazz and rock & roll. During this time the famous samulnori or masked dance dramas, were popular with the public. These dramatic pieces were performed to the beat of shaman drums and other instruments.

Korea's new model of development is being formed in the aftermath of the economic crisis. The new regime's main challenge lies in the proper balance between the state-led economic policies and market-oriented ones. It also involves changing incentives, monitoring, or disciplining systems that have been a part of the system prior the crisis. These issues are covered in Chapters 3 & 4.

Established by Onjo, prince of Goguryeo and the third son of Jumong, Baekje was established in the middle of the Hangang River, those from Buyeo and other areas and migrants from northern China. Baekje was an important regional power in the early 4th century, expanded its territory to Mahan in north and Jeollanam-do south. It was therefore in constant conflict with Goguryeo, and the Chinese commanders at the border.

The decline of Silla between the 8th and 9th centuries resulted in the rise of powerful local factions. Gungye was a nobleman from Later Baekje who established a kingdom in Songak with Songak as its capital. He was the ruler of a large portion of today's Jeolla province and Chungcheong. Then, he moved the capital to Wansanju and became a rival to Goguryeo.

However the rule of his was short-lived. Wang Geon, a powerful local leader who defeated Gungye in 935 and united Goryeo, Baekje, and Silla and later joined Baekje into Goryeo and acted as a peaceful successor. Wang Geon also introduced fundamental reforms, and strengthened the centralized ruling system. This marked the end of the Three Kingdoms Period. The Korean peninsula was later ruled by the Goryeo Dynasty. In the Three Kingdoms period, Goguryeo, Baekje and Silla gradually grew to become powerful states in Manchuria and on the peninsula.
